New Legislation Passed in Ukraine

According to TSN.ua: Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, has passed a law enabling the country to join the Convention on International Access to Justice. This move will grant Ukrainian citizens the right to receive free legal assistance in 28 other countries. The legislation, identified as draft law No.0304, was submitted by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and received parliamentary backing.

Participating Countries in the Convention

The Convention includes a broad list of member states, which are:

  • Albania
  • Belarus
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Brazil
  • Bulgaria
  • Estonia
  • Spain
  • Kazakhstan
  • Costa Rica
  • Cyprus
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • North Macedonia
  • Poland
  • Romania
  • Serbia
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Croatia
  • Czech Republic
  • Montenegro
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland

In a related development, over 300,000 Ukrainians currently in the country are eligible to extend their visas for an 18-month period. Separately, the United Kingdom has extended the application deadline for visa extensions from 28 to 90 days. This legal aid initiative is particularly significant for the millions of Ukrainian refugees displaced across Europe, offering crucial support for navigating complex residency and legal matters abroad.

Therefore, ratifying the Convention on International Access to Justice marks a vital step in securing legal protections for Ukrainians overseas.

Joining the Convention could substantially improve the legal standing of Ukrainians in other nations by granting them access to necessary legal aid. This is especially pertinent during wartime and crises, when many are forced to seek protection and legal support in foreign states.

The legislative changes also reflect Ukraine's ongoing efforts toward European integration and the development of legal standards that safeguard human rights.
