Flight Cancellations Strand Ukrainians in UAE: Alternative Routes Home.
Ukrainian Citizens Seeking Return from the UAE
According to Novyny.live: Due to the unstable security situation in the Middle East, numerous Ukrainian nationals have found themselves stranded in the United Arab Emirates following widespread flight cancellations. In response, the UAE government has implemented safety measures and established secure air corridors, allowing for up to 48 flights per hour and enabling a partial resumption of air travel. Carriers including Emirates, Etihad Airways, flydubai, and Air Arabia have also partially restored their flight schedules, offering some relief for those attempting to return home. This regional instability has disrupted travel plans for many foreign nationals across the Gulf.
Return Options via Saudi Arabia
For Ukrainians planning their journey home, two visa options are available for crossing into Saudi Arabia: an eVisa or a Visa on arrival. This facilitates potential overland travel via the 'Al Ghuwaifat – Al Batha' border crossing. The driving time to this checkpoint is approximately 4-5 hours (460 km) from Dubai and 3-3.5 hours (350 km) from Abu Dhabi.
After crossing the border, travelers can utilize airports in Saudi Arabia to continue their journey home. King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh is located 555 km from the UAE border, while King Fahd International Airport in Dammam is 360 km away. These routes and visa alternatives could prove crucial for Ukrainians seeking ways to return amid the region's complex circumstances.
The situation underscores the critical importance of diplomatic efforts and international cooperation in ensuring citizen safety during a crisis.
The partial restoration of flights and the new border-crossing possibilities into Saudi Arabia reflect the UAE's intent to maintain tourism flows and assist citizens in distress. This also opens new avenues for regional mobility, which may play a key role as events in the Middle East continue to unfold.
