Salt Prices Set to Rise in Ukraine: Current Cost of Imported and Local Products in Stores.
Ukraine's Salt Supply Situation
According to Novyny.live: The ongoing war has reshaped Ukraine's salt market, with demand now met through both domestic production and imports. Before 2022, the state-owned enterprise 'Artemsil' was the country's dominant producer, covering nearly all national needs. However, its operations ceased in April 2022 following the occupation of its territory. This disruption triggered a sharp surge in salt imports and drove up supermarket prices across the country.
In the immediate aftermath of Artemsil's shutdown, retail prices skyrocketed tenfold—from 9 UAH per kilogram to 90 UAH. This posed a major challenge for consumers, who had to seek out alternatives. As of 2026, salt extraction continues in the Lviv region and Transcarpathia, but the market remains under significant strain.
Supermarket Salt Prices
Salt prices vary considerably depending on the retailer and origin:
- At 'Silpo', a kilogram of basic table salt costs at least 13.19 UAH, while iodized salt imported from Poland is priced at 19.99 UAH.
- In 'Varus', local salt starts at 14.90 UAH per kilogram, whereas a 500-gram package of imported salt can reach 74.20 UAH.
- At 'Metro', the cheapest Ukrainian salt is 14.90 UAH per kilogram, while an imported product costs 32.54 UAH for 750 grams.
Overall, the salt market in Ukraine remains volatile and requires close monitoring. Consumers should be cautious when selecting products, as prices continue to fluctuate and domestic production has yet to stabilize the sector.
The current state of Ukraine's salt market underscores how the war has disrupted local manufacturing and consumer pricing. The halt of Artemsil's operations caused a dramatic price spike, making a basic staple less affordable for the population. Although salt mining has resumed in other regions, the market remains fragile and heavily reliant on imports, which could lead to further price swings and limited product availability for shoppers.
