Ukrainian Paratroopers Upgrade Stryker Armor Against Drone Threats: Inside the Process.
Bolstering Military Vehicle Defenses
According to UATV: In response to the escalating threat of enemy drones, soldiers from Ukraine’s 81st Separate Airmobile Brigade (part of the 7th Corps of the Air Assault Forces) are actively enhancing the protection of their vehicles. Key upgrades include the installation of anti-drone nets and cables, designed to improve battlefield survivability.
The Stryker armored personnel carrier operates on the front lines, but safeguarding it requires extensive modifications. According to service members, these protective upgrades take an average of 10 to 12 days to complete. Challenges arise during this process, particularly due to shortages of spare parts for BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles, which complicates vehicle recovery and combat readiness.
Leveraging Captured Equipment
Additionally, Ukrainian forces are repairing and returning captured Russian T-72 tanks and other Russian-made armored vehicles to active duty. Troops note that enemy equipment is generally in worse technical condition and less well-maintained compared to Ukrainian hardware.
“This vehicle is currently undergoing restoration and repair; its anti-drone protection was damaged,” said Andriy, a brigade soldier.
Military personnel also highlight the effectiveness of these new defensive measures.
“The crews say it’s very practical,” noted Mykhailo, another brigade member. He added that initially, they only applied 20 cm of protective material because the shaped charges were weaker. “When enemy munitions were dropped from above, they mostly stayed on the netting,” Andriy explained.
With enemy drone activity intensifying, Ukrainian forces continue to adapt their vehicles and refine protection methods to maintain combat effectiveness and safety during missions.
These efforts reflect the ongoing evolution of Ukrainian battlefield tactics in response to new challenges. As drone threats grow, improving vehicle defenses and integrating new technologies have become critical strategic priorities. At the same time, the use of captured equipment demonstrates a drive to optimize resources and boost combat readiness, despite persistent repair and maintenance hurdles. This underscores the importance of innovation in modern warfare and the constant need to advance defensive measures.
