Ukrainian gymnast Illia Kovtun won an Olympic award in Paris.

Today, August 5, the artistic gymnastics competitions ended in Paris. Ukraine was represented in the parallel bars final by Illia Kovtun and Oleg Verniaiev.

The 20-year-old from Cherkasy, Illia Kovtun, performed at a very high level and received 15.5 points from the judges. This result brought Illia a silver medal.

Oleg Verniaiev made an unfortunate mistake and received 13.3 points from the judges. With this result, he took 8th place in the final.

The winner with a score of 16.2 points was the Chinese athlete Zou Jingyuan.

Let us recall that in Paris, Illia Kovtun also has two fourth places to his credit.

First, Kovtun took fourth place in the individual all-around final. Former gymnast Lilia Podkopayeva commented on his performance, noting that the Ukrainian was unfairly judged.

Secondly, Kovtun was one step away from a medal in the floor exercises.

Illia also holds "bronze" and "silver" medals from world championships in the all-around. In Paris, he won his first Olympic medal of his career. Additionally, Kovtun represented Ukraine at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

As reported, Yaroslava Mahuchikh became the Olympic champion yesterday, August 4, and Iryna Herashchenko won bronze.

It is worth noting that fencer Olga Kharlan won the first medal for Ukraine at the Paris Olympic Games. In the match for third place, she defeated South Korea's Se Bin Choi.
