Ukraine's Postal Service Granted Full Staff Exemption from Military Draft.
Why Ukrposhta's Entire Workforce is Exempt from Mobilization
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine's national postal service, Ukrposhta, has secured a 100% reservation for its military-eligible employees. This exemption stems from its designation as part of the nation's military infrastructure, a status granted due to a contract with Ukraine's Ministry of Defense to distribute military draft notices. General Director Igor Smilyansky clarified that the reservation was not awarded based on the company's name, but specifically for its critical wartime role:
"We were given the reservation not because we are 'Ukrposhta,' but because we are military infrastructure."
Despite this protection, Ukrposhta faces severe operational challenges. Its branches are frequently targeted with arson attacks as a direct consequence of delivering conscription notices. Smilyansky reported that:
"Almost every week, our branches are set on fire because we distribute these summonses."
These attacks result in significant financial losses, with repair costs for damaged offices running into millions of hryvnias. This situation illustrates the complex and dangerous realities for state enterprises operating in wartime.
Ongoing Challenges for the Company
Consequently, Ukrposhta's status as military infrastructure provides a shield for its workforce but simultaneously exposes the company to new threats in the form of violent attacks on its facilities.
The predicament surrounding Ukrposhta and its staff highlights how the realities of war impact public organizations performing essential social functions. While the reservation allows it to maintain its workforce, the persistent assaults on its branches point to deep societal tensions related to the ongoing conflict. This creates new risks for employee safety and the company's financial stability, compelling management to implement additional measures to protect both its infrastructure and personnel.
