Heating Crisis Threatens Kyiv's Botanical Garden

According to Novyny.live: A critical heating failure at the Hryshko National Botanical Garden in Kyiv has pushed its unique tropical plant collection to the brink of extinction. With temperatures inside the greenhouse dropping to 0°C (32°F), the survival of approximately four thousand tropical plant species is now at severe risk. These plants require a minimum temperature of +15°C (59°F) to survive and thrive. Botanical gardens like this one serve as vital arks for global plant diversity, making this loss particularly devastating.

The scale of the potential loss is immense, as the collection is housed in a massive greenhouse with a dome reaching 33 meters in height and covering over one thousand square meters. The heating system's failure poses a grave threat to this important national treasure.

Roman Ivannikov stated that 'the situation is practically critical.'

The sudden cold shock is lethal to plants adapted to warm, humid environments. The lack of proper heating endangers not just individual species but the entire unique collection, which forms a crucial part of Ukraine's biodiversity. The garden's administration is urgently appealing to relevant authorities for immediate assistance to rescue this vital ecosystem.

The Role of Botanical Gardens in Preserving Biodiversity

This emergency underscores the essential role botanical gardens play as centers for biodiversity conservation, especially amid global climate challenges. Restoring proper conditions for these tropical plants is necessary not only to prevent their extinction but also to preserve their genetic diversity, which holds significant potential for future scientific and medical research.
