Government Resignation Looms: Zelenskyy Taps Naftogaz Chief as Next Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Steps Down
According to Espreso.tv: On July 14, 2023, Ukraine's Parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, approved the resignation of Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko. According to Yaroslav Zheleznyak, this leadership shake-up stems from a mix of political factors, including a push to reset the administration and the Cabinet's inability to make decisions independently. The move signals a broader effort to address governance challenges amid ongoing pressures.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed Serhiy Koretsky, currently head of the state-owned energy giant Naftogaz of Ukraine, to lead the Cabinet of Ministers. On July 15, Zelenskyy stated that Koretsky is the most prepared candidate for the role. A meeting participant quoted the president as saying that
“ideally, both Fedorov and Syrskyi should be fired”but added that
“he cannot do that right now”.
Why the Government Is Changing
The reshuffle may be tied to recent audits revealing overspending of 300 billion hryvnias in the Defense Ministry and the Armed Forces of Ukraine. These findings underscore the urgency of personnel changes at the highest levels of government to improve management processes. Yaroslav Zheleznyak has described Serhiy Koretsky as a strong candidate for prime minister, indicating backing from key political figures.
Ukraine's government overhaul reflects a drive for renewal and greater administrative efficiency amid a complex political and economic landscape. By picking Koretsky, the president may aim to bring more professional leadership, especially in defense and energy sectors. This could help Ukraine better respond to both domestic and international challenges it currently faces.
