Ukraine Has Shifted from Aid Recipient to Security Provider, Says Ursula von der Leyen.
Ursula von der Leyen’s Remarks on Ukraine
According to UATV: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Ukraine has transformed from a recipient of assistance into a provider of security for Europe. She stressed the need to integrate Ukraine’s defense industry with the EU, noting that Ukrainian defense companies rank among the most innovative globally. This shift highlights a broader realignment of roles in European security dynamics.
Advances in Ukraine’s Defense Sector
Von der Leyen highlighted that Ukraine is now producing drones at a scale that matches or surpasses Russia’s manufacturing output. According to her,
“Ukraine is currently manufacturing drones at relevant scales, even exceeding Russia’s production capacities.”This achievement underscores the significant progress in Ukraine’s defense industry, particularly in drone development.
She also noted that Ukrainian-designed drones are being produced in Germany, while fuel for Ukraine’s ‘Flamingo’ missiles will be manufactured in Denmark. These developments point to deepening defense cooperation between Ukraine and European nations. Von der Leyen emphasized that
“we need Ukrainian ingenuity and innovation, combined with European scale and industrial know-how.”
A key part of this process is the backing from European countries, including Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, who has also highlighted the role of Ukraine’s defense industry in regional security. As a result, Ukraine is emerging as a major player in Europe’s defense landscape, helping to strengthen security across the continent.
These statements from von der Leyen, along with support from European states, reflect a shift in Ukraine’s role within global security frameworks. Integrating Ukraine’s defense industry with European structures not only bolsters regional defense capabilities but also drives technological progress and innovation. This could lay the groundwork for stronger EU-Ukraine cooperation, which is increasingly vital given today’s security challenges.
