How Extreme Heat Is Driving Up Mortality Across Europe

According to Espreso.tv: A severe heatwave sweeping across Europe has led to more than 10,000 fatalities, with the vast majority involving individuals aged 65 and older. Between June 22 and June 28, excess deaths totaled 10,650. Scientists attribute this crisis to human-driven climate change, which has pushed temperatures to dangerous extremes in the region.

The heatwave peaked in France, Spain, the United Kingdom, and several other nations. According to national statistics covering 27 EU countries, the excess mortality figures include deaths from all causes. Over 9,000 of the victims were elderly, highlighting just how vulnerable older populations are to severe weather events.

'Such a surplus at this time of year is unusual. It is truly very high. It is difficult to explain such a high level of excess mortality by anything other than extreme heat.' Lasse Westergaard, expert in the field

These findings underscore the gravity of the situation and the urgent need to protect communities—especially the most vulnerable—from the consequences of a changing climate.

Urgent Steps Needed to Address the Crisis

This event highlights the critical importance of helping society adapt to climate change, as extreme weather becomes increasingly common. Authorities and healthcare institutions must take immediate action to:

  • strengthen healthcare systems;
  • provide targeted support for seniors, who are most susceptible to heat-related harm;
  • focus on long-term strategies to combat climate change.

Such measures could help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
