Animal Rescue Volunteer Dies on Bridge in Druzhkivka: She Stayed Behind for Her Husband.
The Tragic Death of Olha Kuzmenko
According to Espreso.tv: Olha Kuzmenko, a volunteer with the charity fund '12 Vartovykh,' was killed on a bridge in Druzhkivka. She dedicated herself to rescuing animals and remained in the city because her husband refused to evacuate. A regular contributor to the fund, she worked tirelessly to find homes for animals. The last pet she placed was a dog named Buba.
She was last heard from on July 7. Her husband later discovered her body on the bridge in Druzhkivka. This region, along with nearby areas in Donetsk Oblast, has seen multiple volunteer deaths. For instance, in Sloviansk, volunteer and chaplain Yaroslav Pavenko died in a Russian shelling. Near Chasiv Yar, a vehicle carrying foreign volunteers came under fire, killing citizens from Spain and Canada.
Hazardous Conditions for Volunteers
Kuzmenko's tragedy underscores the dangerous environments Ukrainian volunteers operate in, especially near active combat zones. Her commitment to animal rescue and community support will serve as a lasting reminder of the heroism of those who continue their work under extreme duress.
Her death highlights both the risks volunteers in Ukraine face and the critical importance of their efforts during wartime. Despite constant threats, many persist in providing aid and caring for those in need, including stray animals. This incident also emphasizes the urgent need for better security for all personnel working in conflict zones and draws attention to the bravery of volunteers who risk their lives daily to help others.
