Smuggling Scheme for Draft-Age Men to Moldova Uncovered in Odesa: Case Details.
Illegal Transport of Conscription-Age Citizens to Moldova
According to Novyny.live: Authorities in Odesa stopped two men attempting to illegally transport conscription-age citizens to Moldova. Law enforcement intercepted their operation near the border crossing. The suspects, aged 68 and 29, had organized this scheme, offering exit services abroad for substantial fees. The cost of their services ranged from $6,000 to $8,000, respectively. Clients had already made deposits totaling $2,500 into a cryptocurrency wallet.
Officers halted vehicles near the Ukraine-Moldova border, enabling them to apprehend the individuals involved. Both men have been notified of suspicion under Article 332, Part 3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This charge carries a maximum penalty of nine years in prison along with asset forfeiture. Currently, the older suspect is under round-the-clock house arrest, while the younger one remains in custody with the possibility of posting bail.
Structured Schemes for Illegal Departure
Additionally, investigators uncovered that a 71-year-old retiree from the Volyn region planned to help one man flee to Moldova for $15,000. Separately, a 55-year-old resident of Sokal will face trial for arranging an illegal border crossing for a conscription-age man for $30,000. These cases highlight the existence of organized networks aimed at facilitating unlawful departures, raising concerns among law enforcement agencies.
This situation underscores the pressing issue of illegal migration in Ukraine, especially amid the ongoing military conflict. With conscription still active in the country, such structured schemes could be exploited to evade service, a matter of particular concern for authorities.
Apprehending these individuals may serve as a warning to other potential offenders that their actions will not go unpunished.
