Who was Vasyl Barladyanu
Vasyl Barladyanu (1942–2010) was born in Transnistria into the family of a descendant of a general of the Ukrainian People's Army. At the age of three, he lost his father, who was sent to a labor camp by the Soviet regime. This tragedy became the first painful experience in his life.
Barladyanu received an education as a military correspondent and later as a philologist. He worked as an art scholar in museums in Western Ukraine and the Prague National Gallery, researching the connections between Ukraine and the Balkans and the Mediterranean. He taught at leading Odesa universities, promoting Ukrainian and world art.
Persecution and resilience
In the 1970s, Barladyanu's scientific publications attracted the attention of the KGB. He was interrogated, searched, and fired from work. He spent time behind bars twice for 'defamation of the Soviet order'. In total, he spent six years in camps, working in a stone quarry. Even then, he did not break: he endured over a year of hunger strike.
After his release, he was forced to work as an electrician, but he continued to write and research culture. In 1987, he joined the International Committee for the Protection of Political Prisoners, and in the 1990s, he lectured in Canada and the USA, later returning to teaching in Odesa.
Legacy
Barladyanu's scientific and cultural legacy consists of over a thousand works in six languages. This is a huge contribution to the development of Ukrainian humanitarian thought. His life and творчість are examples of strength of spirit and dedication to his country.
