Ukraine Unveils Personal Belongings of Petliura and Konovalets for the First Time – Here’s Why It Matters.
Exhibition of Symon Petliura’s Personal Items Opens in Kyiv
According to Espreso.tv: On May 26, a landmark event took place in Ukraine: the first-ever public display of personal belongings belonging to Symon Petliura and other key figures of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921. The exhibition was held at the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, located at 2 Volodymyrska Street. It drew senior officials and military leaders, who underscored the importance of reclaiming historical memory—a topic of growing relevance as Ukraine continues to assert its national identity.
Among the showcased items are Petliura’s personal effects, as well as military uniforms worn by Yevhen Konovalets and Andriy Melnyk. Museum Director General Olena Zemliana delivered a welcome speech, highlighting the event’s significance. Andriy Pyshnyi, Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, also attended and unveiled a commemorative coin marking the 100th anniversary of Symon Petliura’s memory.

The opening ceremony was attended by:
- Acting Head of the Security Service of Ukraine, Yevhen Khmara
- Commander of the National Guard of Ukraine, Oleksandr Pivnenko
- Artur Tsyhanok-Paireri
First Deputy Minister of Culture of Ukraine, Ivan Verbytskyi, stressed the need to honor those who fought for independence, stating:
“This event is part of a broader state policy to reclaim our own history”(Ivan Verbytskyi).
The Pylyp Orlyk Foundation funded the exhibition, demonstrating support for initiatives aimed at preserving historical memory. Foreign Minister of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha reinforced the importance of restoring historical memory, a task especially urgent for modern Ukraine.
Andriy Pyshnyi also recalled the significance of Symon Petliura’s words:
“Strength grows in struggle”, emphasizing that history and memory are vital components of contemporary Ukrainian society. The exhibition marks an important step in restoring historical justice and honoring the heroes who fought for Ukraine’s independence.
This display of personal items from Petliura and other Ukrainian Revolution figures highlights the crucial need to preserve historical memory in today’s Ukraine, especially amid the challenges the country faces. Reconnecting with the past allows new generations to grasp the legacy of independence fighters—a legacy that remains deeply relevant in the ongoing struggle for sovereignty and the values they championed.
