Ukraine's State-Owned Banks on the Privatization Table

According to Novyny.live: The National Bank of Ukraine is exploring the possibility of selling off PrivatBank and Oschadbank. NBU Governor Andriy Pyshnyi announced this during a press briefing, stressing that a final decision hinges on a broader strategy for the state banking sector. That strategy is expected to be ready by the end of June.

Andriy Pyshnyi stated: 'Privat — why not? Oschad — why not?'

This signals openness to discussing privatization options. However, he also emphasized the need for an industry-wide blueprint, noting that 'the fate of state banks should only be decided once a comprehensive plan for the entire sector is in place.'

Operational Shifts at State Banks

In related developments, Oschadbank has already updated its rules for cards that expired in 2022. Meanwhile, some PrivatBank customers must update their personal data within 30 days. These moves reflect increased activity among state banks as the sector undergoes changes.

As part of crafting the state banking sector strategy, authorities will determine what roles state banks should play, which areas they should operate in, what performance benchmarks to set, and whether it makes sense to reduce the government's stake in the banking system over time. A key consideration is how these efforts connect to the development of Ukraine's stock market.

The NBU's initiatives could significantly reshape Ukraine's financial landscape. Privatizing state banks may boost their efficiency and competitiveness. At the same time, the focus on a comprehensive strategy underscores the need for a systematic approach to banking reforms—one that can foster stability and trust in the country's financial system.
