New 10-Hryvnia Coins Unveiled by Ukraine’s Central Bank: A Tribute to the Mykolaiv and Odesa Regions.
Launch of Commemorative Coins
According to Novyny.live: On June 12, the National Bank of Ukraine introduced a new series of commemorative 10-hryvnia coins honoring the Mykolaiv and Odesa regions. These coins are struck from a zinc-based alloy with a nickel coating and are recognized as legal tender. A total of two million of each type will be minted and released into circulation.
Design and Symbolism
The coin designs carry deep symbolic meaning: the obverse features an ancient Rus ornament border along with the denomination and year of minting, while the reverse displays a stylized map of Ukraine highlighting the administrative boundaries of these two regions. National Bank Governor Andriy Pyshny stated that these numismatic pieces are meant to capture the resilience of Ukraine’s southern territories in metal.
A portion of the initial run will be sold through the NBU’s online numismatic store. Two more metal coins are scheduled for release in June 2026. The coins will also be available for purchase through a network of distributing banks, including:
- UKRGASBANK
- PrivatBank
- TASCOMBANK
- Oschadbank
- PUMB
This initiative allows Ukrainians to add symbolic new pieces to their collections—coins that reflect the historical and cultural importance of the country’s southern regions.
The release of these commemorative coins is part of the National Bank of Ukraine’s broader strategy to promote numismatics and raise public awareness of the nation’s cultural heritage. Beyond serving as a means of payment, these coins stand as a symbol of unity and endurance for the Ukrainian people, especially in light of current events. By making them available through both an online store and major distributing banks, the NBU ensures broad access, which could help foster a growing interest in coin collecting across Ukraine.
