Memorial Day of Defenders of Ukraine
On August 29, Ukraine marks the Memorial Day of fallen defenders. On this day, Ukrainians honor those who gave their lives for the independence and formation of Ukraine, reports FREEДОМ.
Ilovaisk Tragedy
On August 29, 2014, Ukrainian military personnel attempted to break out of encirclement near Ilovaisk in the Donetsk region. At that time, the Russian command violated the agreement: Ukrainian troops came under fire while passing through what was supposed to be a 'green corridor.'
'Since 2014, this battle for Ukraine's right to exist has continued. Since 2022, Ukrainians have been defending their independence in a full-scale war. This is an extremely long and complex path of courage. And we do not forget who is preserving Ukraine. Eternal glory to all who stood up to defend Ukraine! Eternal memory to everyone who died in the struggle for Ukraine! Glory to Ukraine,' said the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.
Lost Lives
As a result of the Ilovaisk tragedy, about 370 Ukrainians were killed, over 250 people died during the escape from the 'corridor', and about 300 were taken captive.
It should be noted that in one day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed 850 Russian occupiers, 4 tanks, and 61 artillery systems.
The Memorial Day of Fallen Defenders is a time when each of us can stop and honor the memory of the heroes who opened the way to freedom for us. These events remain in the memory of the people as a symbol of selfless bravery and devotion. In particular, the Ilovaisk tragedy reminds us of the price Ukraine paid for its independence, as well as the importance of supporting and remembering those who fight for our state.
