Kyivstar launches satellite communication without additional equipment: how it will work
The Ukrainian company Kyivstar is testing a new technology, Starlink Direct to Cell, which allows sending SMS via satellite from a smartphone. The launch of this technology across the country is planned for this autumn, as reported by the Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov.
'Together with Kyivstar CEO Oleksandr Komarov, we tested Starlink Direct to Cell. This technology will enable Ukrainians to stay connected without mobile network coverage via SMS'
According to Fedorov, users do not need to purchase expensive equipment; it is enough to have a 4G smartphone with a SIM or eSIM card. The technology will allow staying connected even in hard-to-reach places, such as mountains or during bad weather. However, the main condition for its operation is direct visibility of the sky. Ukraine is one of the first countries in the world where the Direct to Cell technology is being launched alongside the USA, Australia, Japan, Canada, and New Zealand thanks to collaboration with SpaceX. Even in the difficult conditions of war, Ukraine continues to develop and implement innovative technologies to ensure reliable communication for all citizens.

How much will the service cost for Ukrainians

Initially, testing of the Starlink Direct to Cell service will be conducted in six regions of the country. In test mode, the service will be free for Kyivstar subscribers. Later, it is planned to introduce tariffs for this service, but this service will not be provided to residents of temporarily occupied territories. It is worth noting that the presence of direct visibility of the sky is a mandatory condition for using this technology. The Ukrainian company Kyivstar is testing a new technology, Starlink Direct to Cell, which will enable sending SMS via satellite directly from a smartphone. This innovation will allow Ukrainian users to stay connected even in hard-to-reach places, enhancing the overall level of communication convenience.
