Actor Viacheslav Dovzhenko on Financial Struggles: Fame Does Not Guarantee a Stable Income.
The Financial Hardships Facing Ukrainian Actors
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian actor Viacheslav Dovzhenko has voiced his concern over the economic challenges confronting performers in his country, even those who have achieved public recognition. He pointed out that popularity is no assurance of financial security for actors. Dovzhenko stressed that the absence of a royalty system in Ukraine makes their professional lives particularly difficult.
The Need for Tangible Recognition
The actor expressed a desire for professional acclaim and success to be matched by material reward.
"I wish our recognition came with financial compensation. Unfortunately, we still operate under a Soviet-era approach to the acting profession,"Dovzhenko noted. He also emphasized that when an actor performs a role, they become a co-author of that character, which heightens their responsibility to deliver an outstanding performance.
"I would very much like that to be the case. But it definitely isn't. My own reality, in particular, is quite modest," added the actor, highlighting the importance of financial support for the development of Ukraine's film industry. In Dovzhenko's view, every role an actor accepts sets a benchmark they must strive to meet at the highest level.
"Because you no longer have the right to make a mistake or to approach your work half-heartedly,"he concluded.
In raising this issue, Viacheslav Dovzhenko has drawn attention to the crucial matter of financial support for actors in Ukraine, calling for the establishment of a royalty system that would properly acknowledge their contribution to cinematic art.
Dovzhenko's comments reflect ongoing challenges within the Ukrainian film sector, notably the inadequate financial backing for performers. The lack of a royalty framework can hinder the development of talented artists, which in turn negatively impacts the overall state of the nation's cinema. This situation requires urgent attention, as a thriving film industry can be a significant driver of both cultural and economic growth for Ukraine. The call for reform comes at a time when the country's cultural output is gaining more international visibility.
