Billions for Ukraine: UK Unveils New Aid Package for Air Defense, Shells, and Drones.
UK Military Support for Ukraine
According to UATV: Britain is set to maintain its military backing for Ukraine, providing funds to acquire air defense systems, long-range artillery shells, and drones. UK Defense Minister Dan Jarvis announced these plans during the Contact Group meeting held in Brussels on June 18.
Aid Packages
The Ukraine Defense Contact Group convened at NATO headquarters, where a $1 billion allocation was revealed for two separate assistance packages. The first package includes:
- 200,000 long-range 155mm artillery shells, purchased at a cost of $1 billion;
- $650 million for 100 Patriot air defense missiles under an accelerated funding mechanism;
- an additional $1 billion for one million Ukrainian drones, covering financing for 150 domestically produced drones and 350 radar-guided air defense missiles.
Dan Jarvis underscored the critical need to support Ukraine, stating:
'Our mission is to back Ukraine, strengthen its capacity to defend itself against the relentless attacks of Putin's war machine, and fortify Ukraine to secure a lasting peace.' - Dan Jarvis
Furthermore, a package worth £752 million will be financed using proceeds from frozen Russian assets. 'We cannot let them down,' Jarvis added, reaffirming Britain's commitment to standing by Ukraine in its struggle.
This UK support highlights the ongoing international solidarity with Ukraine amid the armed conflict. Military aid, including modern air defense systems and drones, is vital for enhancing the country's defensive capabilities. Such measures could shift the war's trajectory by equipping Ukraine with the resources needed to counter aggression.
