Tops of Easter cakes: a new marketing trend or a challenge to traditions? Clarification by Metropolitan Drabinko.
In supermarkets of Ukraine, tops of Easter cakes appeared shortly before the Easter holidays. This new product has sparked much discussion and debate among Ukrainians. Tops of Easter cakes serve as an alternative to full-fledged Easter bread, which is an important part of the Easter basket. They have the same shape and top glaze, but without the main part. Some buyers consider it a convenient option if they do not want to spend time preparing or buying the full product.
However, Metropolitan Oleksandr Drabinko of Pereiaslav and Vynnyky expressed very negative views on this innovation. He believes that the tops of Easter cakes are not Easter cakes, but just small pastries. The words of the metropolitan emphasize the difference between the spiritual meaning of Easter and the commercial approach to this holiday. Tops of Easter cakes may blur the meaning of important spiritual traditions.
Some priests believe that the shape or size of the Easter cake does not matter. The most important thing is that Christ is Risen and the joy of the holiday should be present. They see no problem with the sale of tops of Easter cakes in supermarkets. The question of whether the sale of tops of Easter cakes will be a lasting trend remains open. But it is each Ukrainian who must decide what is more important for them - practicality or the preservation of traditions.
