UN Human Rights Chief Condemns Russian Strikes on Ukraine's Energy Grid, Leaving Thousands Without Heat.
UN Official Voices Outrage Over Attacks on Ukrainian Energy Infrastructure
According to TSN.ua: The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has condemned the widespread Russian Federation attacks targeting Ukraine's energy systems. These strikes have cut off heating and electricity in major cities, including Kyiv and Odesa. In the Ukrainian capital alone, 5,635 apartment buildings were left without heat, with 80% of them having only recently restored heating following attacks on January 9th. These assaults on critical civilian infrastructure represent a severe escalation in the conflict's humanitarian impact.
A Sustained Campaign Against Power Systems
Since the start of October 2022, Russian forces have conducted a systematic campaign of strikes against Ukraine's energy infrastructure, affecting at least 20 regions. Similar attacks last year resulted in power outages lasting up to 18 hours a day. On January 20th, several Ukrainian electrical substations critical for nuclear safety were damaged. Notably, the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant lost its external power supply, raising grave international concerns about nuclear risks.
“The deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure is a clear violation of the laws of war.”
Volker Türk
Volker Türk also stressed that it is 'horrific to see the suffering of the civilian population'. His remarks underscore the severe consequences these attacks have for ordinary Ukrainians, who are enduring a harsh winter without reliable power. The international community is closely monitoring these events, as the human rights violations and threats to nuclear safety pose a significant regional and global concern. The response from the UN and other international bodies may influence future actions to protect civilians.
Ukraine's energy situation remains critical, with repeated attacks creating immense hardship for the population. The ongoing destruction hampers recovery efforts and deepens the humanitarian crisis, keeping international pressure on Russia to cease such tactics.
