Political Tensions Mount in Hungary Ahead of Parliamentary Vote

According to UATV: In Budapest, large-scale rallies are underway supporting both the ruling Fidesz party and the opposition Tisza party as Hungary approaches its parliamentary elections scheduled for April 12, 2023. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has held office since 2010, is fighting to retain power while the opposition, led by Péter Magyar, now leads in public opinion surveys. Independent polls show Tisza ahead of Fidesz by 14 percentage points, with 49% support compared to Fidesz’s 37%.

Growing Concerns Over Foreign Interference

Amid the election campaign, Péter Magyar has raised alarms about possible Russian interference in Hungary’s affairs. On March 7, 2023, he alleged that Russia may be assisting Orbán’s campaign. Reports have since emerged that 14 fabricated videos targeting the Tisza candidate have already been prepared. Furthermore, Vladimir Putin has reportedly appointed Sergey Kiriyenko to oversee a covert operation to influence Hungary’s election.

In response, Viktor Orbán has called for mobilization, stating:

“We face 28 difficult days. We must win not just as we did four years ago, but even better.”
Meanwhile, Péter Magyar issued a direct challenge to Orbán:
“I call on Viktor Orbán to immediately halt the planned series of election fraud.”
Volodymyr Zelenskyy also weighed in on the situation, commenting: 'No one can say what will happen if or when Hungary’s leadership changes. We do not influence that choice.'

As the parliamentary elections approach, Hungary remains in a state of heightened political tension, with clear signs of fierce competition between the ruling party and the opposition. The outcome of the vote could significantly reshape the country’s political landscape and its relations with neighbors and major global powers, especially amid rising concerns over foreign interference in domestic affairs.
