Born in Ukraine, He Renounced His Citizenship—Now He’s a Candidate for Prime Minister of Romania.
Eugen Tomac and His New Citizenship
According to Espreso.tv: Eugen Tomac gave up his Ukrainian citizenship in order to acquire Moldovan nationality. This move was a key prerequisite for his nomination as a candidate for Prime Minister of Moldova. On June 4, Romanian President Nicușor Dan officially appointed Tomac to the position, and the decree confirming his appointment was signed on June 5.
Tomac, 44, was born in the village of Ozerne, located in the Izmail district of Odesa Oblast, which is now part of Ukraine. He has ten days from the date of his appointment—until June 15—to form a new government.
Tomac’s Political Career
Throughout his political career, Tomac has established himself as an active figure. He was one of the founders of the People's Movement Party (PMP) in 2013. He also gained significant support in the 2012 parliamentary elections, securing 78.6% of the vote among Romanians living abroad. In 2019, he was elected to the European Parliament.
This development marks a shift in Tomac’s political trajectory, as he now seeks to pursue his ambitions on Moldova’s political stage.
Renouncing his Ukrainian citizenship and obtaining Moldovan nationality represents a crucial step in Tomac’s political path in Moldova. It also highlights the interplay between interstate relations and personal political decisions, especially amid regional shifts. Against the backdrop of political instability in Moldova, the incoming prime minister may face significant challenges in forming a stable government and advancing reforms.
