Israel's response to Iran's missile attack will not be restrained — WSJ.
Israel is considering striking one of Iran's facilities in response to the missile attack that Iran carried out yesterday. However, this Time, the response from Israel is expected to be stronger, placing the Biden administration before a new challenge as it tries to maintain peace and avoid escalating the conflict, reports The Wall Street Journal.
"The US no longer has enough diplomatic means to force Iran to cease fire in Gaza and Lebanon," said Jonathan Panikoff, a former US intelligence officer who now works at the Atlantic Council, a think tank in Washington.
Now, with Iran firing over 180 ballistic missiles toward Israel, which seems intent on providing a decisive response, the task of avoiding a regional war becomes extremely challenging since October 7, Panikoff added.
According to some analysts, if Israel attacks Iran's nuclear facilities or oil infrastructure, the stakes will significantly increase. Such an airstrike could prompt Tehran to conduct a stronger missile barrage, organize terrorist attacks outside of Israel, and accelerate its nuclear program, hastening Iran's ability to produce a nuclear bomb.
However, Israel is most likely to avoid attacks on facilities that could provoke a full-scale war with Iran, believes Norman Ruhle, former head of US intelligence on Iran from 2008 to 2017.
