Return of Service Members

According to Novyny.live: Service members who went absent without leave (AWOL) before June 12, 2023, can now return through a simplified procedure until September 20, 2023. This announcement marks a key step for those seeking to resume their military duties after a period of absence.

The return process is available via the 'Army+' app. Submitting a request is straightforward:

  • Open the 'Reports' section in the app menu;
  • Find the relevant report form;
  • Indicate the unit the service member belonged to before going AWOL;
  • Select a military unit from the list;
  • Choose a preferred service direction;
  • Provide details on civilian experience and previous role;
  • Explain the reasons for leaving without authorization;
  • Upload a military ID document;
  • Enter a phone number for unit representatives to contact;
  • Optionally, attach training certificates, medical board findings, or other health documents;
  • Complete the military information fields.

Once submitted, the request is reviewed within seven days. If approved, the service member receives a status of 'On the Way' and must report to the chosen unit within five days. Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has reported a large-scale return of soldiers after going AWOL.

This initiative aims to encourage service members to return to their duties and rebuild army ranks.

The government’s move is designed to stabilize military units and restore their combat readiness amid the ongoing conflict. The importance of this simplified return procedure lies in its potential to reduce the number of desertions and boost army morale, as soldiers get a chance to correct their mistakes and rejoin service. Additionally, tougher penalties for repeat AWOL offenses underscore the state’s serious approach to military discipline.
