Extending Contract Service in Ukraine's Armed Forces

According to Novyny.live: Service members who entered into a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine may remain on duty after their term expires. However, this does not apply to agreements signed after February 24, 2022. Due to the ongoing martial law, Ukrainian legislation introduces specific rules regarding the extension of military service.

Under Article 23, Section 8 of the Law on Military Service, a contract can be automatically extended, but this provision excludes contracts signed after that date. Military service in Ukraine now encompasses both contract-based service and mobilization, while conscription has been abolished through legal amendments.

Rights to Discharge and Mobilization

Those who signed a contract during martial law are entitled to leave service once the contract period ends.

Yuriy Ayvazyan notes: 'Automatic extension cannot be used as a justification to prevent discharge if the contract signed during martial law has reached its expiration date.'

Consequently, service members completing their duty may be mobilized into the Armed Forces of Ukraine after being discharged. These legal changes aim to reflect the current security situation in Ukraine and ensure proper organization of military service.

This initiative demonstrates how Ukrainian law is adapting to wartime conditions to provide flexibility in managing military personnel. Given the prolonged conflict, simplifying the discharge process alongside the possibility of mobilization could affect the overall strength of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a critical factor for national security under the present circumstances.
