Orban's Allegations and Ukraine's Response

According to Novyny.live: On January 24, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban alleged that Ukraine was interfering in Hungary's internal political affairs ahead of its parliamentary elections. This statement provoked a sharp rebuke from Ukrainian officials. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Orban's remarks, suggesting they were primarily aimed at the ethnic Hungarian community in the Zakarpattia region. This diplomatic spat occurs against the backdrop of Hungary's long-standing opposition to EU aid for Ukraine and its stalled NATO ratification process.

Viktor Orban stated: 'Our patriotic government is saying a clear 'no'. We do not want the money of Hungarian families to be sent to Ukraine, and we do not want Hungary to be dragged into the war.'

This stance has caused concern in Ukraine, as it appears to be an attempt by Orban to divert attention from domestic issues by using Ukraine as a political tool.

In response to Orban's accusations, Andrii Sybiha emphasized that when the Hungarian Prime Minister speaks of blocking Ukraine's EU accession for the next 100 years, he is not truly addressing the Ukrainian state. According to Sybiha, Orban is instead communicating with ethnic Hungarians in Zakarpattia. He further noted that 'Putin does not want peace, but desires the continuation of the war. Therefore, by blocking Ukraine's accession to the EU, Orban is fulfilling Putin's wish.'

Furthermore, Sybiha compared Orban's actions to historical figures, stating:

'Today, Orban is acting not even like Miklós Horthy, but like Hitler's henchman, Ferenc Szálasi.'

This indicates profound dissatisfaction on the Ukrainian side with the Hungarian Prime Minister's position and its impact on Ukrainian-Hungarian relations.

Escalation of Political Tensions

Consequently, the situation surrounding Orban's statements and Kyiv's response points to a sharp escalation in political tension between Ukraine and Hungary, which could have further consequences for both nations.

The deterioration of relations between Ukraine and Hungary, set against the backdrop of internal political challenges within Hungarian society, underscores the importance of regional stability. Political statements that can be used to mobilize an electorate often lead to a worsening of bilateral ties and could negatively affect Ukrainian-Hungarian cooperation, particularly in the context of Ukraine's European integration. Such events require careful monitoring, as they may have serious implications for security and stability in Central and Eastern Europe.
