Two SBU Deputy Chiefs Arrested in $620,000 Bribery Scheme Linked to Amber Mining.
Top SBU Officials Arrested in Corruption Sting
According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian law enforcement detained two senior officers from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) on March 16 on suspicion of bribery tied to the amber mining industry. The suspects are Oleh Tokarchuk, deputy head of the SBU’s Main Directorate in Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast, and Ihor Brik, deputy head of the SBU office in Rivne Oblast. These arrests mark a significant escalation in anti-corruption efforts targeting high-ranking officials.
Brik was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting a $620,000 bribe—equivalent to roughly 27.33 million hryvnias. Tokarchuk and another deputy chief were apprehended during the receipt of a $60,000 bribe. Authorities say the officials had demanded these sums from the head of a company operating in the amber sector.
Fallout and Implications
The SBU has confirmed the arrests, underscoring the gravity of the case. During the detentions, investigators seized mobile phones containing evidence of criminal activity. If convicted, the officials face up to 10 years in prison along with asset forfeiture.
These events highlight the ongoing battle against corruption in Ukraine and the urgent need for transparency in natural resource extraction. The detention of such senior figures is a crucial step in combating bribery and safeguarding state interests. The public and experts are closely watching how the case unfolds, as it could significantly impact trust in state institutions and their ability to root out corruption at every level.
