Will the US ban TikTok? Court supports law requiring the sale of the platform.
A federal appeals court has upheld a law that will ban TikTok in the US within the coming months unless its Chinese parent company sells its stake. CBS News reports this.
A panel of three judges from the DC Circuit Court unanimously upheld the US Department of Justice, rejecting petitions from TikTok and the Chinese company ByteDance.
We concluded that the parts of the law that the petitioners have the right to challenge, namely the provisions concerning TikTok and related companies, withstand constitutional scrutiny. Therefore, we deny the petitions.
It should be noted that President Joe Biden signed a law banning TikTok in the US if the Chinese company ByteDance does not sell its stake.
The ban on TikTok was included in a bill providing foreign aid to Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan. This step caps off years of attempts by Washington to limit the operations of TikTok, which is linked to China. However, the law will not lead to an immediate ban on TikTok.
Subsequently, the executive director of TikTok stated that he expects to win the lawsuit challenging the law signed by US President Joe Biden. Many experts doubt whether any potential buyer has the financial resources to purchase TikTok and whether the governments of China and the US would approve the sale.
As reported, the US Congress has approved a decision to ban the Chinese social network TikTok. The application will be unavailable for download in 270 days if the Chinese owner does not sell the platform.
