Home Insurance: Millions of Households Risk Missing Out on Claims.
According to The Sun: Analysis shows that most home insurance policies do not include coverage for accidental damage, such as spilled drinks or broken windows.

Only 28% of building policies and 27% of contents policies include accidental damage coverage as standard.
More than 70% of policies offer this coverage as an optional extra or basic coverage with the option to upgrade.
Moreover, some insurers do not offer such an option at all.
At the same time, 31% of consumers who purchased insurance thought their policies covered all incidents that were not their fault, according to a Which? survey of 4000 people.
Many believe that if they have coverage for their belongings, it protects them from any incidents related to those belongings, including accidental damage.
Accidental damage is one of the most common reasons people claim for insurance payouts.
This means that hundreds of thousands of people may find themselves in a difficult situation every year.
In another Which? survey of 2804 individuals who tried to make a claim on their policy in the last two years, accidental damage accounted for about five percent of cases.
Which? states that misunderstanding the terms of insurance leads to problems for consumers.
Their previous research indicated that consumers do not understand what is included in their policy and what is excluded, and often struggle to differentiate between various products.
This data emerged after Which? filed a super complaint to the Financial Conduct Authority.
In the complaint, Which? outlined its concerns about "serious flaws" in the home and travel insurance markets.
The consumer organization calls for radical changes in how insurance companies treat their customers.
What Does Accidental Damage Cover?
Home insurance primarily covers significant losses from events such as fire, storm, and flood.
Accidental damage is an additional option that can provide you with extra protection.
However, the definition of what is covered can depend on the specific provider, so it is essential to review your policy carefully.
Richardson, deputy editor at Which? Money, stated:
“When it comes to making a claim on your insurance, there is often an issue with the fine print.”
Most policies that include accidental damage coverage cover issues caused by broken glass and underground pipes.
However, in many cases, the coverage does not include damage caused by cleaning or tenants.
Insurance also does not cover damage due to improper maintenance or damage caused by pets.
A representative of the Association of British Insurers emphasized:
“Always check the details of your policy or consult with your insurer to ensure you have the necessary level of protection.”Given the survey results, it is essential for consumers to read the terms of their insurance policies carefully. Misunderstanding coverage can lead to financial difficulties in the event of unforeseen circumstances. It is advisable to reach out to insurance companies for clarifications to avoid unpleasant situations in the future.
