Harassment of the mother of Oscar Pistorius's victim

According to The Sun: Fans of the convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius are ignoring the tragedy, directing insults at the mother of his victim, Reeva Steenkamp. A hate campaign against her mother has started on social media, claiming that she is 'reaping the rewards' from her daughter's death.

June Steenkamp was hospitalized for urgent brain examination, where it was determined that the 78-year-old woman suffered a life-altering stroke.

After the campaign to raise money for intensive rehabilitation began, cruel comments started pouring in. Pistorius supporters left messages claiming that June's stroke is 'karma' for her life being 'destroyed' by the man who killed her daughter, and accused her of 'using' Reeva's death.

The mother of three was found unconscious on her farm in South Africa and currently cannot speak or comprehend what is happening around her while doctors conduct examinations.

Reaction from the attorney and family

June's attorney and close friend, Tanya Cohen, comments: “There are people celebrating that she had a stroke.

“[They think], she deserves what has happened to her,”
she says.
“Some believe that she got what was coming to her for ruining Oscar’s life.”

Hatred is also directed at the Facebook page of the Reeva Steenkamp Foundation, established by the model's parents to support victims of gender-based violence.

Among the comments was this:

“KARMA is indeed wonderful, she made his (Pistorius’s) life hell, and now it’s all coming back to her. IT’S NICE TO HEAR!!!!”
Another commenter added:
“Stop using your daughter’s death.”

Family facing difficulties

June's daughter, Simone, expressed her thoughts on the bullying from home in the UK, noting that Pistorius's fans have been harassing their family since Reeva’s murder. “We are under pressure as we fight for justice for Reeva and other victims of gender-based violence,” she said.

Simone also expressed concern for her mother's condition, noting that June 'has not yet recovered from the death of Barry', her husband, who died two years ago. Currently, June has no health insurance, but Tanya has started a fundraiser to provide her with private medical assistance.

Despite the hatred from Pistorius's fans, many comments express support for June and condemn the trolls. One comment reads:

“Love to June. Some people are outright horrible creatures.”

The family acknowledges that social media has caused tremendous harm to their emotional state. The suffering they have endured since losing Reeva continues to affect their lives. Now, they hope for recovery and seek to find a new place for a peaceful life in the UK.
