Super Typhoon Ragasa, known as 'King of Storms', is the strongest storm of 2025 and could become the most powerful in Hong Kong's history.
The meteorological service has issued the maximum T10 warning signal, informing residents of a 'persistent dangerous' weather state.
Wind speeds have reached 137 miles per hour, while waves crash against the shores of Hong Kong.
The police confirmed that two people, including a child, were rescued from the sea after being swept away from the waterfront.
The authorities warned that storm waves could reach five meters, which has not been seen since Typhoon Hato in 2017 and Mangkhut in 2018, which caused significant damage.
“Ragasa poses a serious threat to Hong Kong, potentially reaching levels of Hato in 2017 and Mangkhut in 2018,” warned deputy leader Eric Chan.
Residents of Hong Kong have raided supermarkets trying to stock up on food. Educational institutions have closed, races have been canceled, and more than 700 flights have been canceled.
Cathay Pacific has canceled over 500 flights, while Qantas reported that the airport would suspend operations for two hours.
“The most important thing is to take better safety measures so I can sleep easier,” said Zoe Chan, a clothing store owner in Wan Chai.>The neighboring Shenzhen has evacuated 400,000 residents from coastal areas, while Macau has closed bridges and evacuated tourists.
Situation in Taiwan
In Taiwan, Ragasa's outer fronts have brought almost 60 cm of rain. A barrier lake in Hualien County has overflowed, causing flash floods that submerged the city of Guangfu.
“In some places, the water has temporarily risen to the second floor of buildings,” said Li Longsheng, deputy chief of the fire department of Hualien County.
Two people have died, 30 are missing, and 7,000 have been forced to leave their homes, according to authorities.
Rescue teams are trying to reach hundreds of people trapped on high ground.
Hong Kong was forced to raise the typhoon signal to eight – the third most significant – as super typhoon Ragasa strikes.
Typhoon Ragasa has left three victims in the Philippines due to landslides and floods, including a 74-year-old man who died in his car under the debris. More than 17,500 people have been forced to leave their homes, and thousands remain without electricity.
The storm is now approaching Guangdong province, home to Shenzhen's tech hub and the metropolis of Guangzhou. Over a million people have already been evacuated in southern China.
“Officials have warned of a 'catastrophic' situation as storm surges and floods threaten,” they stated.
Ragasa, which translates to 'wave' in Tagalog, has wind gusts of up to 177 miles per hour, making it a Category 5 monster, comparable to the most destructive typhoons in history.
Scientists argue that storms like Ragasa are becoming increasingly destructive due to climate change, which warms the oceans, leading to heavier rains, higher waves, and more powerful winds.

The situation in the region remains tense as residents of both countries prepare for the potential consequences of the storm. Authorities urge the public to follow safety recommendations, as natural disasters can cause significant damage. Against the backdrop of climate change and intensifying hurricanes, scientists stress the importance of taking action to prepare for similar catastrophes in the future.
