Pollution of the Desna: Environment Ministry begins preparations in case of water quality deterioration in Kyiv.
Pollution of the Desna River spreads to the village of Kolychivka in the Chernihiv region, but there is no threat of water quality deterioration near the drinking water intakes in Kyiv. This was reported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.
The Ministry is collaborating with Kyivvodokanal to develop measures in case of water quality deterioration, but at present, there are no such risks. Desna River pollution is accumulating within the boundaries of Chernihiv and the village of Kolychivka, but there is no intense smell or mass fish die-off observed.
Additionally, 17.5 tons of dead fish have already been collected in the Chernihiv region. The Ministry is considering the installation of aeration units to oxygenate the Desna, but currently, there are no risks.
Ruslan Strelets, former Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, emphasized that pollution of the Seym River is a serious problem and it is essential to prevent polluted waters from reaching the Kyiv water intake.
It is currently unknown whether the pollution of the Seym River was intentional or the result of an accident since it occurred on the territory of Russia.
