Could Belarus Serve as a Launchpad for a New Attack on Kyiv?.
The Belarusian Border Situation
According to TSN.ua: In a recent interview, former Ukrainian Security Service officer Ivan Stupak assessed the possibility of Russian forces launching another assault on Kyiv from Belarusian territory. Stupak stated that the current threat level for such a scenario is low. He emphasized, however, that no potential development should be dismissed outright, even if its probability of occurring is currently estimated at less than 5-10%.
Stupak further noted that the border with Belarus is now heavily mined and fortified with modern defensive structures, significantly enhancing Ukraine's security posture against potential renewed aggression from Russia. He also highlighted Ukraine's capacity to respond decisively to any new attack.
“Let Lukashenko not be offended—we will be able to attack all objects on the territory of Belarus that we deem necessary to strike: airfields, oil refineries, and so on,”
Ivan Stupak
The Current Assessment
Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine's Military Intelligence Directorate, has corroborated this view, confirming that Russian troops currently lack the capability to mount a new offensive against Kyiv. This reinforces the assessment that, despite underlying threats, the situation along the Belarusian border remains controlled and well-secured. Belarus, a close Russian ally, allowed its territory to be used as a staging ground for the initial invasion in February 2022, making its border a persistent strategic concern.
The security of the Belarusian border remains a critical priority for Ukraine's national defense, as any shift in Russia's aggressive policy could have severe consequences. The evaluations from experts and officials indicate that Ukraine is prepared to counter potential threats, which may help deter Russian military action in the near term. Maintaining border control and strengthening defensive positions are key elements in ensuring the country's stability.
