Ex-Navy Chief of Ukraine Yeliseyev Sentenced for Treason.
Denys Yeliseyev’s Defection to Russia
According to Espreso.tv: In 2014, as Russia’s occupation of Crimea began, the commander of Ukraine’s navy, Denys Yeliseyev, refused to follow orders and switched allegiance to Moscow. This act led to his conviction for high treason, desertion, and other offenses. He became the first senior Ukrainian naval officer to face prosecution for such crimes.
Career Path in Russia
By July 2014, Yeliseyev had joined the Russian military, taking the role of deputy commander of the Baltic Fleet. Even after more than 50 admirals and captains were dismissed from the Baltic Fleet’s headquarters in 2016, Yeliseyev was the only high-ranking officer to keep his position. He openly supported Russia and wore its military uniform.
As a result of his actions, Yeliseyev was placed on sanctions lists by Ukraine, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and other nations. His military career and subsequent conduct continue to spark discussion and concern amid ongoing developments in Ukraine.
Yeliseyev’s case highlights the difficult choices faced by Ukrainian military personnel early in the conflict with Russia, when many had to decide between loyalty to Ukraine and opportunities in the Russian armed forces. His prosecution marked a pivotal moment, underscoring the severe consequences of betrayal in the military and the critical need for discipline and patriotism during foreign aggression.
