Power Outage at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

According to UATV: On June 20, 2023, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant experienced a loss of external electricity for the first time in 20 such events, after the Russian military damaged a key power line. The 330 kV 'Ferroalloy-1' transmission line was knocked out by shelling. In response, emergency diesel generators automatically kicked in, providing partial backup power to the facility.

External power had only been restored on June 13, 2023, making this new disruption especially alarming. Ukraine's Ministry of Energy described the situation around the plant as 'extremely dangerous,' adding that 'Russia is creating a threat to global nuclear safety.' These incidents highlight the ongoing risks to one of Europe’s largest nuclear sites amid the war.

Threats to Nuclear Safety

To prevent a potential disaster at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, the Ministry of Energy stressed that 'the only way to avoid a catastrophe is the complete demilitarization of the station.' These events raise serious concerns about the safety of nuclear energy in the region and underscore the dangers of military conflicts near nuclear facilities.

The June 20 power outage at the Zaporizhzhia plant—marking a first in a series of 20 incidents—shows the persistent threats posed by ongoing hostilities in Ukraine. The heightened nuclear safety risk has become a critical issue for the international community, which closely monitors the plant. The push for demilitarization highlights the need to ensure safety not only for Ukraine but for the entire world, as any accident at the site could have catastrophic consequences across a wide area.
