Aerial Bombardment Ravages Zaporizhzhia: Woman Injured, Homes Destroyed.
Assaults on Zaporizhzhia: Late June to Early July 2023
According to UATV: Russian forces carried out renewed attacks on the city of Zaporizhzhia on June 30 and July 1, causing widespread destruction, fires, and civilian casualties. On the morning of June 30, a kamikaze drone detonated in the historic downtown area, shattering windows and damaging building facades, including those of the local history museum. Within an hour, seven guided aerial bombs were dropped, leveling a neighborhood of private homes and sparking a major blaze. The strikes also damaged a kindergarten and dozens of cars. These attacks are part of a broader pattern of intensified aerial assaults on Ukrainian urban centers in mid-2023.
Further Strikes and Local Reactions
At around six in the morning on July 1, Russian forces again bombarded Zaporizhzhia with aerial munitions. A woman was wounded in the attack, and roughly ten private houses sustained damage. Residents have voiced their outrage over the direct impact on their lives.
“We were sitting in the house. Now we have nothing left—at least we’re alive,” said Nadiia.
“Bastards! There’s nothing else to say. They just hit residential areas where people have lived their whole lives. We built, we saved,” remarked Liudmyla.
These events underscore the alarming situation in the region and the mounting threat to local civilians.
The assaults on Zaporizhzhia highlight the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine, which continue to inflict severe destruction and suffering on the civilian population. Such strikes on residential districts raise concerns not only among local inhabitants but also internationally, as they violate fundamental principles of international humanitarian law designed to protect non-combatants during armed conflicts. The escalating tension in the area jeopardizes the stability and security not only of Zaporizhzhia but also of other Ukrainian cities.
