Zelensky discussed a new US sanctions package with Biden and more.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called US President Joe Biden, during which they discussed new sanctions against Russian energy and strengthening Ukraine's air defense.
Zelensky expressed his condolences to the US leader over the tragedy in California, where many people died as a result of fires. He also thanked Americans for their heroism in fighting wildfires.
On sanctions against Russian energy
The main topic of conversation was the new US sanctions aimed at the shadow tanker fleet of Russia and energy companies, including 'Gazpromneft' and 'Surguutneftegaz'. According to Zelensky, these companies raise funds for Putin personally.
On Ukraine's air defense
The leaders also discussed the situation at the front and the need to strengthen Ukraine's air defense to protect against Russian missiles and drones. Zelensky emphasized the effectiveness of the 'Patriot' systems in the hands of Ukrainian soldiers.
Biden stressed that maintaining and protecting Ukraine's independence is of great importance for all of Europe and the democratic world.
Reminder on security guarantees
President Zelensky earlier noted that security guarantees are a necessary condition for peace negotiations with Russia. He emphasized the need for joint guarantees from the US and Europe.
Ukraine will receive additional air defense systems and support packages worth 2 billion dollars as a result of the 'Ramstein' meeting. Eight coalition capabilities involving 34 countries have also been created.
In the coming weeks, a visit by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to Kyiv is expected to discuss peacekeeping missions and support for Ukraine.
The President positively assessed the new US sanctions against the Russian energy sector, which cover over 400 entities and aim to undermine the financial basis of the Russian military machine.
