Zelensky Warns Lifting Sanctions Could Hand Russia $10 Billion for War Effort.
Latest Developments on Sanctions Against Russia
According to TSN.ua: Volodymyr Zelensky has raised alarms over the potential consequences of easing restrictions on Russia, stressing that such a move would significantly bolster the aggressor nation’s military capabilities. According to the Ukrainian president, relaxing sanctions on Russian oil could provide Moscow with roughly $10 billion to fund its ongoing war. These remarks came during a joint press conference with the French president on March 13.
In a related development, the United States has temporarily lifted a ban on purchasing Russian crude oil and petroleum products currently aboard maritime vessels. This exemption is set to remain in effect until April 11, 2026. Meanwhile, UK Energy Minister Michael Shanks has reaffirmed that the British government has no plans to ease its own sanctions on Russian oil exports.
Aid to Ukraine and Global Policy Debates
Zelensky also announced that Ukraine will dispatch expert teams to three countries to assist in countering Shahed-type drones. As the Ukrainian president stated,
“lifting sanctions will only strengthen Russia.”
The president’s warnings underscore the critical role sanctions play in curbing Russian aggression. Easing these measures would not only endanger Ukraine’s security but also threaten broader regional stability. In light of the recent U.S. decision and contrasting positions from nations like the United Kingdom, further international discussions are expected regarding whether to maintain or relax sanctions—a choice that could significantly alter the trajectory of the conflict and the economic outlook for both Ukraine and Russia.
