Zelenskyy Warns of Massive Casualties in Counteroffensive Due to Personnel and Arms Shortages.
Challenges in Liberating Occupied Ukrainian Territories
According to Novyny.live: In an interview with the BBC, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy outlined the severe challenges Ukraine faces in reclaiming its occupied lands. He stated that a shortage of personnel and weaponry could lead to enormous human losses if Ukraine were to act while the Russian army holds a numerical advantage.
“We would not have enough people. And what is land without people? Frankly speaking — nothing,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
Russian Demands and the Complex Reality
Discussing the potential for retaking occupied territories, Zelenskyy expressed the view that it is a matter of time, but added that the current situation is complicated by the superiority of Russian forces. He also noted that any attempt by Ukraine to liberate these areas now could lead to the deaths of 'millions'.
“I don’t see this as just territory. I see it as a refusal and a weakening of our positions,” the president stressed.
Furthermore, Zelenskyy highlighted the critical shortage of weapons, which complicates any rapid liberation of all occupied territories. He expressed distrust of Vladimir Putin's willingness to stop the war, suggesting that 'perhaps for some time it would satisfy him... he needs a pause.' In this context, the president remarked that 'the key issue now is the availability of deterrent factors.'
Volodymyr Zelenskyy also commented on Russia's demands for the surrender of the Donbas, noting that they emerged due to the successes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the front line. This issue remains open, and Ukraine's position on the possibility of ceding territory leaves room for further discussion.
The president's remarks underscore the immense complexity and risks Ukraine faces in the ongoing conflict. The lack of resources and military equipment poses a critical obstacle to any counteroffensive, pointing to the urgent need for sustained international support and strategic planning. The war in Ukraine has reached a critical juncture, where battlefield dynamics directly influence diplomatic negotiations. Meanwhile, the situation on the front, particularly the successes of Ukrainian troops, is shaping new challenges in talks with Russia, especially regarding territorial demands, making the question of liberation even more pressing in the context of international politics.
