Zelenskyy Urges China to Join Peace Efforts, Not the War.
China's Potential Role in Peace Process
According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on March 2, emphasized the critical importance of involving China in efforts to end the war in Ukraine, which was initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine's goal is to engage China specifically in the peace process, not in the conflict itself. He stated:
“For us, it is important to draw them in not to the war, but precisely to the process of ending the war that Putin brought to Ukraine” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Furthermore, the Ukrainian president reported a constructive conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, with whom he discussed details of Merz's recent visit to China. Zelenskyy noted:
“I had a good talk with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Naturally, the details of his visit to China were important to me” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
China's Stance on Conflict Resolution
Chinese leader Xi Jinping has also articulated his position on resolving the Russo-Ukrainian war, underscoring the necessity of consistent dialogue and negotiations. He remarked: “The key to finding a solution to ending the Russian-Ukrainian war lies in consistent dialogue and negotiations.” These statements highlight China's growing role in international efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. China's position is particularly significant given its status as a major global power and its complex relationship with Russia.
Bringing China into the peace settlement process could substantially alter the dynamics of negotiations, considering Beijing's influence in international politics and the global economy. The emphasis on cooperation with Beijing underscores Ukraine's aim not only to achieve peace but also to leverage new diplomatic tools to realize this goal. Additionally, constructive dialogue between Ukraine and Germany could help forge a more unified international front in the efforts to resolve the conflict.
