Ukraine Aims to Curb Russian Oil Exports Through Sanctions, Says Zelenskyy.
Statement from Ukraine's President
According to UATV: On March 3, following a meeting of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to reduce the export of Russian oil by implementing sanctions. He told journalists that a range of measures are being considered to limit these export capabilities. This move is part of Ukraine's broader strategy to weaken Russia's economic ability to fund its war.
"There are various measures to curtail their export opportunities, beyond our own long-range military responses. Other solutions exist, such as sanctions targeting tankers, companies, and cargo transport entities. Restrictions could also be placed on captains and crews, and there is a possibility these tankers could later be detained," stated Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
International Actions Intensify
These developments coincide with heightened international efforts to address the energy crisis and reduce reliance on Russian energy supplies. In a related move, the European Commission plans to convene a meeting of its energy group on March 5 in response to rising oil and gas prices.
Cutting the flow of Russian oil through Ukraine represents a significant step in efforts to diminish Europe's energy dependence on Russia. The proposed sanctions and restrictions could substantially impact energy supply and prices across the continent. The upcoming European Commission meeting underscores that energy security is now a top priority for EU member states, which may lead to new initiatives in the energy sector.
