Zelenskyy: Wartime Elections Would Divert Critical Resources from National Defense.
The President's Stance on Holding Elections During War
According to Novyny.live: In an interview with AFP, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated he has not made a decision on running in an election during wartime, arguing that a campaign would divert the state's focus from its defense. He emphasized that any question of a change in power must be decided solely by the Ukrainian people. Zelenskyy stressed that, under current conditions, the nation must concentrate exclusively on the war as its single overriding priority.
The Domestic Situation
The President noted that 3.6 million citizens have been displaced from their homes due to the war, further complicating the country's situation. Consequently, Ukraine is not considering online voting, as this could create additional risks to stability and security. This stance reflects the immense logistical and security challenges of holding a national vote while under invasion.
Zelenskyy also expressed concern over the inherent danger of holding elections during an armed conflict, stating that political processes are a distraction the nation cannot afford. When questioned about the possibility of elections, he remarked:
“Will they give us a two-month ceasefire? I said right away, give us two months in the winter.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Therefore, the President's position remains unequivocal: Ukraine's current priority must be defense, and the question of elections can only be considered once the immediate threat is overcome. This underscores the leadership's effort to concentrate all resources and attention on military operations, which are critically important amid the ongoing conflict. The postponement of elections during this period also reflects a desire to avoid political instability that could further weaken the nation at war.
