Can Europe Fully Replace U.S. Military Aid for Ukraine? Zelenskyy Weighs In.
Military Support Under Discussion
According to Novyny.live: In an interview with Italy's Corriere Della Sera, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the potential for European partners to substitute for American military assistance. He stressed that Europe cannot fully replace the military support provided by the United States. This discussion comes amid ongoing uncertainty over the future of U.S. aid, a cornerstone of Ukraine's defense since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.
Zelenskyy emphasized the need for Ukraine to coordinate closely with its allies should the United States decide to withdraw its forces. He also stated:
'Europe needs the practical wartime experience that Ukraine has gained.'
Zelenskyy added that 'European industry now needs to obtain a license from the U.S. to produce American weapons in our country.'
Contacts with European Leaders
During the conversation, Zelenskyy mentioned Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. The Ukrainian President noted he does not maintain contact with Orbán, as the Hungarian leader is unwilling to negotiate, but he does have a line of communication with Fico. He said:
'I do not speak with him because he does not want to, but I have contacts with Robert Fico.'
Volodymyr Zelenskyy also expressed confidence that 'Orbán will be defeated in elections, and then we can restore regular relations with Hungary.' This highlights his strategic approach to European diplomacy and a desire to maintain ties with nations that could positively influence Ukraine's situation. Navigating relations with EU members holding pro-Russian views remains a complex but necessary diplomatic challenge.
Therefore, the Ukrainian President continues to seek ways to strengthen international backing, underscoring the importance of European aid and cooperation with key partners. Given the potential shift in U.S. military support, intensifying engagement with European leaders could prove decisive for Ukraine in the ongoing conflict. Cooperation with countries holding pro-Russian positions may also open new avenues for Ukraine's diplomatic efforts in the region.
