Zelenskyy Urges Europe to Speak Out Over Hungary's Detention of Ukrainian Citizens.
Hungary's Detention of Ukrainian Bank Employees
According to Novyny.live: On March 5, 2023, Hungarian law enforcement officers illegally detained employees of Ukraine's 'Oschadbank' in Budapest. The arrests followed a statement by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, who suggested the detainees might be linked to a 'Ukrainian war mafia.' Armored cash-transport vehicles belonging to the detained individuals were later found on the premises of Hungary's Counter-Terrorism Center. This incident occurs against a backdrop of historically strained relations between Ukraine and Hungary, particularly regarding minority rights and regional security.
The National Police of Ukraine responded by opening criminal proceedings. However, Hungarian authorities denied Ukrainian diplomats access to the detainees, raising further questions about the legality of the Hungarian officers' actions. The Ukrainian citizens were held in handcuffs for a period of 28 hours.
Release of Detainees and Ukraine's Response
The detained Ukrainians were released on March 6, 2023. Following their release, Ukraine called on Hungary to return any funds or bank metals that may have been confiscated during the detention. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the situation, emphasizing the critical need for a European response:
“Today, Europe needs to do one thing — not remain silent.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
This episode highlights the ongoing tension between Ukraine and Hungary, especially concerning security and human rights issues. The detention of Ukrainian citizens without diplomatic access caused outrage not only in Ukraine but also among international observers, potentially impacting future bilateral relations.
The importance of a firm response from the international community to such incidents remains a pressing issue, as nations in the region face new challenges amid heightened geopolitical tensions.
