US Security Guarantees for Ukraine Tied to Withdrawal from Donbas, Zelensky Reveals.
Volodymyr Zelensky on Security Guarantees for Ukraine
According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has disclosed that the United States links security guarantees for Ukraine to Kyiv's withdrawal from the Donbas region. In an interview with Reuters, Zelensky emphasized that talks involving the US, Russia, and Ukraine have failed to produce meaningful progress, as Moscow has shown no willingness to engage in diplomacy. He stressed that Ukraine must respond to Russian attacks, underscoring the critical need to defend its territory.
Meetings between Ukrainian and US delegations took place on March 21 and 22, 2023. During the same interview, Zelensky also warned that Russia could deploy up to 1,000 drones to strike Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Russian military has intensified combat operations along the front line, raising serious concerns about regional security.
Russian Attacks and Ukraine's Response
On March 23 and 24, 2023, Russia launched nearly 1,000 drones and 34 missiles against Ukraine. In response, the president declared:
'We will respond to every one of their attacks' - Volodymyr Zelensky. He also described any withdrawal of troops from Donbas as 'wrong and immoral,' arguing it would weaken Ukraine's defenses.
Presidential advisor Mykhailo Podolyak added:
'We understand that fair terms mean de-occupation, and the aggressor must pay the full price for everything it has inflicted on the country it attacked' - Mykhailo Podolyak.
The situation in Ukraine remains dire, with ongoing hostilities and persistent threats from Russia. The statements from President Zelensky and his team underscore Ukraine's unwavering commitment to defending its territories and rights, as well as the need for continued international support. In the context of global security, it is crucial that nations backing Ukraine consider the consequences of any compromises that could weaken the country's defensive capabilities.
