Ukraine to Escalate Sanctions Against Lukashenko and His Inner Circle.
Ukraine Targets Belarusian Regime with New Sanctions
According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced plans to broaden sanctions against Alexander Lukashenko and his associates, citing their support for Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Zelenskyy emphasized that sanctions initially imposed on February 18, 2023, were merely a first step. He stated that a legal framework is being developed to extend this sanctions policy not only to Lukashenko himself but also to his inner circle, including his sons. This move comes as Ukraine continues to face military threats facilitated from Belarusian territory.
Zelenskyy outlined the legal basis for these further actions.
"Sanctions against Lukashenko are the initial step. We will build on this and are currently working on the legal foundation to continue the sanctions policy. This will apply not only to Lukashenko but also to his entourage, his sons, and others," he noted.
The President also stressed that there is concrete evidence of Belarus's involvement in military aggression against Ukraine.
"We have proof of this. Everything is documented on maps and video—how 'Shahed' drones entered from Belarusian territory via signal repeaters. Following this, strikes were carried out against us, resulting in civilian casualties. For us, this is a crime," Zelenskyy added.
Belarus Poses Hybrid Threats to Regional Security
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also confirmed that the current Minsk regime is creating hybrid and security threats not only for Ukraine but for all of Europe. According to him, Ukraine has been documenting the operation of signal repeaters on Belarusian soil since the autumn of 2022, indicating Belarus's active participation in the war on Russia's side. The Belarusian regime's close alliance with Moscow has made it a crucial logistical hub for the invasion.
Consequently, Ukraine is continuing to implement measures to protect its security and regional stability, specifically through sanctions against Lukashenko and his circle.
The expansion of sanctions against the Belarusian regime reflects Ukraine's determination to bolster its defenses and counter external threats. Confirmation of Belarus's role in military actions against Ukraine could become a significant factor in international negotiations and the formation of new alliances. The regional situation remains tense, and Ukraine's further actions may prompt responses from the international community, which could, in turn, influence the conflict's dynamics.
