Phone conversation between Zelensky and Costa
Today, August 29, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky had a phone conversation with President of the European Council António Costa. The main topic was strengthening sanctions against Russia and expanding support for Ukraine.
Tragic shelling of Kyiv
António Costa expressed condolences to the Ukrainian people after the tragic shelling of Kyiv that occurred on the night of August 28. As a result of the attacks, 25 people died, including four children, and dozens more were injured. Zelensky thanked him for the support and emphasized that this attack confirms Russia's aggressive intentions, which do not wish for peace.
Ukraine's position and calls to action
The President of Ukraine noted that our country has repeatedly expressed its readiness for negotiations at the highest level, but Russia shows no signs of dialogue. In this regard, Zelensky called for increased pressure on the Russian Federation, particularly through the introduction of a new EU sanctions package.
Security guarantees and funding
The leaders also discussed the preparation of security guarantees for Ukraine, which would consist of three key blocks. Zelensky emphasized that one of the main points should be Ukraine's membership in the EU and expressed hope for joint progress with Moldova in this direction.
The issue of additional funding for the production of Ukrainian drones, as well as the implementation of the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) programs and the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) was discussed. António Costa assured that he was ready to support these initiatives.
Invitation to Ukraine
At the end of the conversation, Volodymyr Zelensky invited António Costa to visit Ukraine.
It was previously reported that 26 EU member states and the United Kingdom adopted a statement stating that all commanders, perpetrators, and accomplices of deliberate attacks on Ukrainian civilians on August 27 must be held accountable as violators of international humanitarian law.
This conversation underscores the importance of international support for Ukraine in the face of constant aggression from Russia. Leaders of both countries called for actions that would contribute to ensuring security in the region and protecting Ukrainian citizens. The next steps may significantly affect the further development of events, particularly in terms of the sanctions policy from the EU.
