At Davos, Zelenskyy Criticizes Stalled Plans for Tribunal on Russian Aggression.
Zelenskyy's Address at the Davos Forum
According to Novyny.live: During his speech in Davos on January 22, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that there has been no progress in establishing an international tribunal to address Russian aggression against Ukraine. The Ukrainian President noted that, despite prolonged efforts, the issue of punishing the aggressor, specifically Vladimir Putin, remains unresolved.
Zelenskyy emphasized that as the war enters its fourth year, Putin continues to evade legal accountability. He contrasted this with the situation of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who is facing trial in New York, while Putin avoids responsibility. The Ukrainian President also pointed out that the Russian leader is seeking the return of frozen assets in Europe instead of answering for the war he started.
Meeting with Donald Trump
Also on January 22, Zelenskyy met with Donald Trump in Davos, where the two leaders spoke for approximately an hour. This conversation, alongside his public address, underscored the critical importance of sustained international support for investigating Russia's aggression. The creation of such a tribunal faces significant legal and political hurdles, requiring broad consensus among nations.
Zelenskyy's statement highlights the substantial difficulties in creating mechanisms for international accountability for war crimes, which could have long-term consequences for global justice. Unresolved questions about punishing aggressors may also impact international policy and cooperation among states in combating aggression and human rights violations.
